Working Green by…recycling all used batteries
In compliance with California's Universal Waste Rule and the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act, the Department of General Service's Business Services Office has established a battery collection station for the Ziggurat Building. This collection program not only makes the Ziggurat Building compliant, but also supports the DGS' ongoing commitment to Working Green through sustainable business operations and building practices.
Why recycle? Alkaline batteries and other non-rechargeable batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be kept out of landfills to protect the environment.
Rechargeable batteries (nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride and lithium ion) are considered a potentially valuable source of recyclable metal and are recycled by the battery manufacturing industry.
Examples of the common types of batteries that can be collected and recycled here at the Ziggurat include:
- AAA, AA, C, and D batteries
- Button cell (watch and hearing aid batteries)
- Cell phone batteries
- 9-volt batteries.
How can you recycle your used batteries? There are two ways you can get your used batteries to the collection station:
- Place the batteries in an interoffice envelope, marked "batteries," and drop in the out-going mail basket.
- You can also drop off batteries directly at the collection station in the basement mailroom.
If you have any questions, please call Brad Morgan, Chief, Business Services Office at 376-5337.
