Working Green by…recycling used printer cartridges

The Department of General Service's Business Services Office has established a used toner cartridge and inkjet printer cartridge recycling process for the Ziggurat. This recycling effort supports the DGS' ongoing commitment to Working Green through sustainable business operations and building practices.

Why recycle?

Recycling used cartridges cuts waste, decreases energy consumption, reuses resources and saves money.

According to The Green Book:*

  • 400 million cartridges end up in our nation's landfills annually, with a typical cartridge taking 1,000 years to decompose.
  • One year's worth of discarded cartridges, placed end-to-end, would stretch from California to New York.
  • Remanufacturing recycled cartridges uses 80 percent less energy than making new ones.

How do you recycle your used cartridges? It's easy…

  • Place your used cartridges next to the out-going mail basket on your floor's mail station and a BSO employee will pick them up.
  • You can also drop off used cartridges at the basement mailroom.
  • Hewlett Packard has partnered with the Department of General Services as part of a pilot program to implement a print cartridge recycling and environmental printing project throughout California state agencies. Read the press release for more information.

If you have any questions, please call Brad Morgan, Chief, Business Services Office, at (916) 376-5337.
